About Us

Growing up I have always been interested in health and nutrition. Over time I became interested in sustainable agriculture and organic gardening with the intent to optimize the nutritional value of home grown food. I spent a lot of extra time at Universities (PhD in molecular biology) studying everything under the sun from geology to plant physiology and biotechnology (& other related topics).

Leo, my first pet rabbit.

I feel that the heart of true health is centered in our relationship with plants. Understanding the relationship rabbits have had with plants during their evolution was foundational to my approach to formulating a healthier rabbit food. Initially I sought for a way to provide a complete balanced diet to my pet rabbit with foods I grew in my garden. However, over time I realized that instead of trying to avoid nutritional deficiencies that it was far better to optimize nutrition to support optimal health. This is what led me to formulate Sherwood Pet Health Formulas.

Mission Statement

It is our mission to provide pet parents with the best, scientifically backed, nutritional products that will help their loved ones to live the happiest and most healthy lives possible. We hope to influence and educate pet parents everywhere about their pets nutritional, environmental, and emotional health and wellness needs. We will continue to make efforts in serving and aiding in the adoption and rescue process of these small animals with the aim that they are placed in forever homes with educated caretakers.

We have adopted pets from a local shelter or other caretakers involved in rescuing and fostering neglected pets. We are fully committed to the ideology of the HRS regarding animal welfare by providing our own pets with healthy living environments, proper nutrition, regular veterinary care and social/emotional interactions with their own species and with their caretaker who is educated on the principles of training through positive reinforcement. Our pets are our official taste testers used in improving the palatability of our treats, SARx and Support Tablets.

We aim to set the bar high and continuously improve the health and nutritional status of all pets through research and the development of alternative health care options. Our methods of research involve rigorously studying previously published research in all disciplines and formulating ethical minimally invasive experiments that do not harm or reduce the quality of life or wellbeing of any animal. Terminal research isn’t necessary or justified. Technology has been developed for the human health sector to assess a wide variety of health related metrics that are useful in obtaining the needed information to improve the life and health of our furry loved ones. We can’t imagine it any other way.

More in depth research does rely on collaborations with other pet parents and with veterinarians to safely evaluate new and better healthcare options. For example, the previous testing of our blend of motility herbs found in our digestive support tablet involved rabbits afflicted with megacolon and other digestive motility disorders. We validated that this blend of herbs was effective at replacing normal doses of motility drugs in these special cases and involved veterinary supervision.

We are also working with veterinarians on substantiating the health claims found on our food packaging. Pets presented to veterinarians for treatment with preexisting conditions such as chronic urinary sludge will be evaluated for candidacy in the program that includes dietary change along with some before and after radiographs for urinary sludge levels and possible blood panels as ordered by the vet. These pets will also be evaluated for improvements in digestive health, body weight, and fur coat quality due to the improved nutritional status of the dietary change.

We are members of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV). Research projects aimed at answering more complex questions will first be approved through this channel that requires detailed research proposals to be submitted and reviewed by the AEMV board committee members.

We will strive as a company to be ‘true at all times in whatsoever thing we are entrusted’.
